1 of my favorite things virtually android is beingness able to duel-boot os's and playing around with Linux distros ,but ive seen a drop off of them existence brought to Android sadly :(. so im starting this thread in order to get all the duel-kicking,chroot boots and all other ones into one identify :) if i forget 1 please let me at present and ill do my all-time to add it :)

Note these are non all native boots and i accept no responsibility for anything that happens to your device, these are non mine either and the owners should be thanked im just bringing them together :victory:

Native Boots

My favorite and best (in my opinion) are the native boots  Starting off is Ubuntu as a native boot :D

UBUNTU
The original creators in bringing Ubuntu to the Acer a500 beginning are right here on XDA netham45 and sp3dev The original thread can exist found here Here

To start off on booting Ubuntu Natively you're going to need Root obviously and acer recovery installer which can be downloaded from the Android marketplace
for the sake of this tutorial ill get over booting it off the internal storage

i.Showtime past making certain y'all take 8gigs free of internal storage as this is how big the .rar is unpacked

2. after yous download acer recovery installer youll need to wink this recovery Hither

3. After that download all iii of these .rar's onto your pc put them in a folder of there own and extract the first one they should all merge giving you one rootfs File1 File2 File3

4.once yous get the rootfs motility it to the domicile directory of your internal storage

5. power off your tab and kick into your recovery using power and volume- and your good to go

6.some tweaks you could do would be
For sound

                                                                      usermod -a -Thousand sound <your username here>
For cpu frequency scale
                                  sudo add together-apt-repository ppa:artfwo/ppa sudo apt-get update sudo apt-become install indicator-cpufreq
it will announced in you task bar on reboot best set to performance

Backtrack

Ive been told it works the same fashion but replacing the ubuntu.img with the backtrack.img which y'all can download from

http://www.backtrack-linux.org/

Cannot confirm this if someone tests information technology please reply back

BODHI LINUX

Bodhi Linux is another Linux brought to android with the dev existence here on XDA apapousek Make certain to expect at the original thread and give thanks information technology Here
There are to differant builds Alpha1 and Alpha2 sick exist going over Alpha2 :D

1.Start off by using gparted or any partitioning tool should work, and partion your micro sdcard make the starting time i as ext4 and brand it at to the lowest degree 1.5gb proper noun it bodhi make your second partition 128mb at to the lowest degree of fat32 format

2.mount the partitions

3.download bodhi Linux from Here

4.Extract the bodhi tarball to the root of your micro sdcard by using the commands

sudo su cd /media/bodhi/ tar -jxvf /home/name/bodhi_alpha2.tar.bz2

five.Copy recovery.img to the second sectionalization and flash information technology using Acer recovery installer from Here

6.Boot into recovery and you should be good to get :D

7.once booted into bodhi open concluding and type in setupwifi

CHROOT
Non as good in my opinion alot less functionality but there yet fun for testing out a Linux distro and require less infinite without having to sacrifice your recovery:cool:There basically running a virtual machine on top of android to run a Linux distro all the ones I've tried have been slower so i just tend to stay away from them but feel free too XD

First of all there's a couple of unlike apps that will help you become information technology installed hassle free (for the most part)

starting off there's Linux installer standard Here

There'south too Complete Linux installer with two donate versions available Here

Manual Method

At that place's likewise a more manual way of setting up chroot.

one.Make sure you take a terminal emulator Here 7zip Here and a .img file for a linux distro ill put up backtrack since it seems to piece of work well make sure you get the ARM version of Backtrack And finally Android VNC Here

2.Download the .Img file of your choice in this case Backtrack five and extract it one time this is done y'all will get another folder with bt5.img.gz and a whole other bunch files right click on the bt5.img.gz and go to extract here at present copy them all into a folder called BT5

3.copy the folder called BT5 to the internal storage of your device information technology will be around 5gigs

4.Make sure you have Root access and busybox installed

5.Now open up up your final emulator app and type in

Then hit enter and blazon in

You should run across [electronic mail protected] if information technology worked :p if it did and then you can get alee and utilize BT5 commands or yous can go a gui by typing in.
tightvncserver -geometry 1280x800 Striking enter so blazon in export USER=root hit enter then vncpasswd

Now its going to ask you lot for a password just create any random one and then verify it . After that information technology volition ask yous if you want to create a view only countersign hit n

6.Finally open VNC android yous'll have nickname which doesn't thing port which is usually 5901 if that doesn't work try 5902 or 5903 address leave banking concern and make certain your connected to [e-mail protected] just hitting connect :D and your done one final affair to recollect though is when you want to exit you have to get back to terminal and blazon in exit to shutdown

WINDOWS

WINDOWS95
windows is actually run through an app which emulates information technology i believe it has little to none drivers instaled and you lot cant actually do much that ive found but its fun to mess effectually with and show off :express joy: to go this up and running is pretty elementary all you lot have to do is.

one.Download this .rar Here

2.Extract the folder to go a sdl.apk and a folder called sdcard motility both of them to the root of your sdcard

3install the .apk and open up it :) when shutting down though you have shutdown the right manner past hiiting shutdown if yous dont on reboot youll become a scandisk error

WINDOWS XP
Windows xp is even slower more useless and way more than complicated to run BUT its nevertheless kinda cool to take :p

1.Outset you'll want to download everything you'll need bochs for android from Hither Sdl.null from Hither Bochs for pc from HERE and Qumu manager for pc Hither. Last thing you will need is a windows xp.iso file not .img but .iso (ide post one just i read somewhere its ilegal to post .iso for windows :/ )

2.Download and install boch'southward for android on your tablet and then move the SDL.nil to the root of your SDcard

3.Install Boch's and Qemu manager onto your pc

iv. what you going to demand to do is run a virtual automobile with the .iso you have and so commencement thing you'll desire to do is once you install Boch's for your pc hitting the showtime button and so get to all programs and find the Boch'due south folder inside of that folder there should exist a program chosen Disk prototype creation tool.

5. Adjacent type in hd and then hit enter, later on that type in flat then hit enter ten afterwards that its telling you what size y'all desire it to be commonly windows xp doesnt demand more than 1.5gb so type in 1500 and hitting enter and then finally type in c.img and hit enter.

6. Now you want to open up Qemu, once within Qemu you lot want to outset a new virtual machine exercise this by going to the vm tab and click on new virtual machine.

seven.you can give information technology any nickname information technology doesnt thing just give it i and hit next.

viii.At present information technology wants to know how much ram you lot want to classify to this virtual car 512mb to 1gb is usually fine :) pick and hit side by side.

nine. So hit finish now what you lot want to practice is install the .iso to the blank image file merely you need to specify what information technology is so get to the drives tab, click on Harddisk zero.

ten.now yous accept to find the file c.img its usually located in plan files/bochs you might accept to make sure all files is selected in your file type bar.

11.Select thec.img file and hit ok

12. At present you want to click on your cd-rom that is your windows xp.iso file so browse and find your windows xp.iso and click ok.

thirteen. Now your ready to run your virtual machine only striking the run button (greenish one) and if everything went alright you should see information technology starting time to kick up.

14. Now you lot'll accept some on screen prompts make sure yous follow them and choose ntfs file organisation when it prompts yous to. (procedure will take 30min+ depending on computer speed)

15. Once your installation has been completed and your at the desktop you want to stop virtual machine. click yeah stop session. (i know right all that time only to spend two seconds in it)

16.Now you lot desire to notice the c.img file which is no longer blank and has windows xp installed to information technology. Normally in program files/bochs copy it then paste it within the folder chosen sdl on your sdcard. If there is already a c.img inside of it just overwrite it.

17.okay almost washed (i promise :p) your going to want to copy all this code

                                  megs: 256 cpu: count=1, ips=6000000, reset_on_triple_fault=1, ignore_bad_msrs=1 # filename of ROM images romimage: file=BIOS-bochs-latest vgaromimage: file=VGABIOS-lgpl-latest vga: extension=cirrus, update_freq=25 pci: enabled=i, chipset=i440fx, slot1=cirrus ata0: enabled=1, ioaddr1=0x1f0, ioaddr2=0x3f0, irq=14 ata1: enabled=1, ioaddr1=0x170, ioaddr2=0x370, irq=15 ata0-master: blazon=disk, path="c.img" #ata0-slave: blazon=disk, path="d.img" #ata1-master: type=deejay, style=vvfat, path=/sdcard/HDD, journal=vvfat.redolog #blazon=cdrom, path="CD.ISO", status=inserted kicking: c config_interface: textconfig #display_library: x # other choices: win32 sdl wx carbon amigaos beos macintosh nogui rfb term svga log: bochsout.txt sb16: enabled=i mouse: enabled=1 sb16: wavemode=ane, dmatimer=500000 clock: sync=none, time0=1
Now become to your sdcard/and go the sdl folder and find the bochssrc.txt file overwrite everything in that file with the lines of code you simply copied :)
The megs value at the top is how much ram you want to allocate to windows xp

18 Save te text certificate and your set up to run windows xp just open upwards bochs on your phone :)

Just adding another distro. I'm running ARMEDslack. You can apply BODHI LINUX arroyo for installation, merely utilize armedslack's Mini root filesystems instead. For me, there's so many stuff i accept to do afterward installation (mainly recompiling apps & libs) and i'g not sure if anyone interesting in Slackware distro this twenty-four hours. So i'm not recommend this distro unless y'all have too much free time and know how Slackware work :)

Another affair, is there anyone become nvidia brandish driver works? i tin't meet whatsoever practical step to get it working, but ac100 brandish driver unbuntu package. If anyone get information technology working, pls share xorg.conf to me :)

I have a couple questions...

How well does Linux(mainly Ubuntu) run on the A500? Like is it polish and all the various controls work well.

Does the HDMI out piece of work? If so tin can you extend the desktop through the HDMI out to another screen. Like have 2 different windows on each screen.

I'm non sure tour hdmi if you lot exercise all the tweaks information technology runs reasonably well but won't run games and however lags when opening huge programs i had it for a couple of months for the well-nigh part you can install whatsoever you want some programs have missing repositories and y'all would need to create you own but there not that mutual i used information technology for compiling c+ as i demand the multiwindow to do information technology :) but it will most probable crash if you try to update it i updated information technology to 12.04 successfully merely was and then having wifi bug :( you wil need an external usb keynoard to set it up at kickoff when y'all boot up click on the pinnacle correct corner and connect to wifi before doing the setup saves yous a couple of steps :)

Backtrack works natively.
If you lot go on kernel-xp website at that place is a RTL8187 kernel for chroot which works well. Its based on acer ICS source code ;)
